Goodbye 2009 - Hello 2010
I couldn’t believe that 2009 has officially drawn to an end bringing with it the memories of a decade. It feels like yesterday when we ushered in the new millennium in the heart of Hanoi. 10 years, indeed a long time but in reflection it’s probably not that long. The time is forever gone but the memories remain cherished in our hearts
2000 – We welcomed the millennium in front of the Hanoi Opera House amongst thousands of fellow citizens. I enrolled in a Masters degree at RMIT which was then upgraded to a PhD. Thang moved to Singapore to start his 5-year association with Federal Express. This was also the beginning of my infatuation with this island country.
2001 – I spent New Year in Singapore for the very first time although I could no longer remember exactly the celebration. We started the year with a trip to Penang – the first real overseas holiday that we took together. In June I went to Switzerland for a conference before spending the second half of the year in Singapore while my supervisor went on his sabbatical leave. We gave my sister Linh a trip to Singapore and Malaysia as a present for finishing high school, shortly before we all found out that she had failed all her University entrance exams. This was also the year that I lost my paternal grandma.
2002 – We ushered in the New Year in Bali – on Kuta beach to be more exact. It rained but Mother Nature couldn’t quite dampen the celebratory spirits of the street revellers. My sister Linh started University as a full fee paying student in Beijing. Thang completed his Masters degree with the University of Wollongong. We went to Wollongong for his graduation and took a trip to Tasmania afterwards.

2003 – I stayed in Melbourne to celebrate the New Year. I went with my friend Tho (and probably some others but I couldn’t recall) to see the spectacular fireworks display over the Yarra River. Shortly after the New Year I visited my sister in Beijing and stayed with her in her little dormitory room. I was amazed at how much she had matured. Thang and I got married in March ending a 7 year of courtship. I received and accepted a job offer at the University of South Australia where I worked for 2 years. Thang came to Adelaide to visit me for two weeks in August. This was his first time back to Adelaide since he left in 1997.

2004 – Another New Year celebration in Singapore with firework displays around the newly built durian-shaped opera house in the esplanade. We started our friendship with Thanh and Diep, a newlywed couple and although they didn’t stay married for too long we remained friends with them both. I started taking a lot of overseas teaching trips in both Singapore and HK to see Thang more often, who at that time still worked in Singapore while his application for an Australian visa was processed. My aunt Van and my cousin Dung visited me in Adelaide in July, shortly after our first trip to Europe together that took us to Germany, France, Holland and Italy. We also sneaked out for a trip to Chiang Mai in September. The year wrapped up with a visit from Thang’s Dad who did the round to see us in both Adelaide and Singapore.

2005 – This is the milestone year for us with Thang finally obtained his Australian PR in March. In April, we celebrated the 30th year anniversary of the Vietnam Unification in Sai Gon having had the first taste of the Unification Express (the train that took us from Hanoi to Saigon). We also took a side trip to Dalat. Thang moved to Australia in July and we decided to settle in Melbourne so I quitted my job with Uni SA and started working for Deakin. Thang also quickly found a job with CGU, the insurance company. We managed to take another trip to Europe. This time we went to Spain, Portugal and England. Also on the travel front, I took my first trip to the US on a conference with an added-in visit to LA. 2005 was also a very successful year for us in terms of visitors. My dad visited in April, my old colleague from Adelaide Ron visited in the second half of the year and Thanh and Diep visited us at year end. We ended the year with the purchase of our first house in Vermont South – not far from where I work.

2006 – We moved in the new house and before long played hosts to my cousin Dung who paid us a visit before she left Australia and my Aunt Hang and little cousin who came all the way from Germany. This was probably one of the low-key years for us without many activities. At the end of the year we went to Ubon for my friend Suthida’s wedding where we stayed at a beautiful resort overlooking the Mekong river. As usual, we went to Hanoi for our annual visit and stayed there to welcome 2007.

2007 – We were pretty much settled in our house and managed to travel again. Once again, Europe was our destination. We covered the Hapsburg Empire starting in Vienna and ended in Prague. Eastern Europe was breath-taking and much more beautiful than I realized. In August, my Mum and Thang’s Mum came to visit us for the very first time after we settled in Melbourne. We took them to see many places in Melbourne. At the end of the year, we had a quick visit to Vietnam and took my sister with us for a trip to Bangkok and Pattaya. The three of us celebrated the New Year in Pattaya in a bar.
Ushering in 2008 with a bang
2008 – I was pregnant with our first child Alexandria who was born in October. In July when Alexandria was 7 months in the womb we took a final stab at our travel map with a trip to Japan. Despite the wrong timing (it was way too hot in Japan at that time of the year), we were very much intrigued by the Japanese way of life. We also realized that no matter how much you love something you would eventually get sick of it if you constantly have too much of it. I was just talking about Japanese food! Alexandria arrived in 2008 – an event that changed our lives in more way than one. My mother came out to help for a few months.

2009 – The first part of the year was devoted to looking after the little one who was now starting to become the centre of our universe without us realizing. I came back to work in August when Thang’s parents came out to Australia to help out for a little while. My sister Linh got married in November and Alexandria was brought back to her ‘literal’ motherland for the second time.

There you have it – our decade in a nutshell. Happy 2010 everyone!
